that belt also has a tensioner, just the old bolt style BUT if you over tighten that one you'll chew up the bearing in that $$$$$ blower. Might wanna Let someone change that for ya, could be cheaper

I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent 2 door and need to get the timing belt and serpentine belts replaced. Does anyone know how much this might cost? You shouldn't have both. The 02 Accent should have a Timing Belt. But if I remember correctly, the water pump should be replaced at the same time.

I have a 1999 Mercury Villager and have changed oil religiously and have never had a single problem out of this van.It has 165k miles on it and the timing belt and serpentine belt have never been changed.My question is does this van have 2 seperate belts? I refuse to take it in. People here gouge you like crazy, and I've heard changing the flasher is one of the easiest things you can do. I've changed my own serpentine belt and I regularly change the oil in my car, I think I can handle this. Simple find the flasher assymbly. It is usually under the drivers side of the dash. Usually by the fuse panel. Typically it is a silver metal cylinder with 2 prongs or a yello plastic cylinder with two prongs. unplug it and match it with the replacement flasher then plug it in.
It works very simple when voltage is put to the flasher the thin inside metal thermal connects the circuit .when the thermal strip gets hot it bends breaking the conection. When it cools. likly quickly in .2 to .9 seconds in most flashers .The thermal metal strip bends back closing the loop and flashing the turn light again .
Flashers go out fairly often depending on how much they are used .Remember though that also the turn signal lamps can go burn out. So if you replace the flasher and there is still a problem then look at the flasher lights themselves front and rear for each side. 1. Service center with Toyota dealer recommends me to change the serpentine belt and he quotes $135 for it. When I contacted another service center, they said that there were three kind of serpentine belts (one for air conditioning and others for something else) and questioned which one needs to be replaced. But, my toyota dealer says there is only one serpentine belt. Does anyone know how many serpentine belts found in 1998 Toyota corolla LE model? If more than one kind, any idea which one the toyota dealer refers to?
2. Toyota dealer recommends me to change Timing belt and quotes $350 for it. When I contacted other service center, they said there was no timing belt in 1998 Toyota corolla LE, but it had Timing chain and it didn't have to be replaced in the lifetime of the car. Who is correct?

I am changing a serpentine belt on a 2000 Chrysler Concorde. I have the AC belt on I cant find out how to get the front MAIN belt on does anyone know if that idler pulley moves? If you have slight to moderate skills, and some fairly basic tools, by all means, brakes are one of the easiest things in the world to do yourself. People are trained with all the Meineke and Brake Depot commercials that you need to have the pros do it for $100 per axle, not including rotors.
And of course, a mechanic will tell you to have the pros do it...job security.
Don't fall for it.
You'll need (other than obvious tools) a bigger C-clamp, a socket set, maybe a crowbar, a screwdriver wouldn't hurt, to pry pads out if necessary. Maybe a hex set or allen wrench set, depending.
Each axle, assuming nothing is seized on too badly, should take the average backyard do-it-yourselfer about an hour or less. Wheel off, unbolt caliper from rotor. Might take socket, might take hex or torx wrench. Pads snap right out (and back in) caliper pretty easily. Use a C-clamp if you have one to push the caliper's piston back, so the new pads will fit around the rotor.
By the way, most rotors are manufactured so they CAN'T be turned, so you may need new ones. Usually $30-60 each. Sometimes less than $20. Reverse procedure to re-install.

It's pretty easy. Just take the wheel off, and the brake caliper is held on with a few bolts. Once it is off (carefully handle it so you don't pull on the brake line too much - I usually attach it to the spring or something with a zip tie while I'm working on it.
Take the old pads out, and inspect them - compare them on both sides of the truck to see if one side is wearing more than the other (sometimes a sign of brake problems).
Also check your rotors to see if they are damaged. If the pads wore to the point where they were metal on metal, then you probably want to take them to a shop and have them turned (usually pretty cheap). If they don't have enough hardface left on them you will need to replace them (check junkyards - find out how thick the rotor is supposed to be, and measure to make sure it isn't worn out - it doesn't really matter what they look like since you can just have them turned).
If everything looks good, then take off the master cylinder cap, and push the brake cylinder on the caliper back in (go slowly otherwise brake fluid will spurt out of your master cylinder and make a mess - if you have topped off your fluid, you might need to get some of it out with a bulb syringe or something). You should be able to push the brake cylinder in by hand unless it has problems - some are harder to get on than others, I sometimes use a large c-clamp to get them started, but don't force them too much or you can damage them.
Once the cylinder is pushed back in, you should be able to install the new pads, and then reinstall the caliper. If it won't fit over the rotor, then push the brake cylinder back in more until it will fit. Make sure to put the pads in correctly - take a picture, or make a little sketch of how things are before you start taking it apart - it's amazing how much that helps (or get a manual - that never hurts either).
Make sure your master cylinder has the proper amount of fluid in it, and put the cap back on. Always test your brakes out somewhere safe a few times before putting it back on the road (it's amazing how many people forget the important step of making sure that their brakes work before jumping back into traffic).

Each axle, assuming nothing is seized on too badly, should take the average backyard do-it-yourselfer about an hour or less. Wheel off, unbolt caliper from rotor. Might take socket, might take hex or torx wrench. Pads snap right out (and back in) caliper pretty easily. Use a C-clamp if you have one to push the caliper's piston back, so the new pads will fit around the rotor.
By the way, most rotors are manufactured so they CAN'T be turned, so you may need new ones. Usually $30-60 each. Sometimes less than $20. Reverse procedure to re-install.

It's much better in my opinion to get to know some local independent shops you can find below that are recommended by your neighbors. The %26quot;gaurantees%26quot; you get at those chain stores and quickie lubes don't mean much. They end up charging you a lot anyways and less qualified mechanics are generally working on your car. The Ford dealer is a good place to get a diagnosis and quote for engine and transmission problems and let the independent shops do your brake, belts and hoses, exhaust, tires, and suspension work. When a car gets titled in your name at the motor vehicle department, it gets a safety check. If that safety check says your car is ok, then Midas is just trying to make money in my opinion rather than only fix what's needed to be fixed. Preventive maintenance like filter and fluid changes are specified in your owner's manual and are the most important thing for you to spend your money on.

As the disc brake pads wear they also slowly wear away the rotors and will need to be replaced.
Serpentine belt is what drives your alternator, AC, power steering and stuff like that. That shouldn't cost you more than $10-$15 or so at an autoparts store. I actually just did that on my 96 civic yesterday, its actually real easy, the power steering pump and alternator, all you have to do is loosen the mounting and adjusting bolt, swing it back and take the belt off, and for the AC belt you need to loosen the bolt on the pully (the one on the top, not the crank and not the compressor pulley, the remaining one) and pull the belt off. To get the AC belt all the way off you need to unbolt the mount that goes from the AC to the body and just slip the belt over that. Installation is reverse of removal

2001 Jeep Wrangler with 4.0 liter engine. We have checked the New repair manual and it explains how to change the belt, but gives no info on releasing the tensioner. 4.0 liter probably doesnt have a belt tensioner. Most 4 liter dodge engines you have to loosen the idler pully and then the screw on top of the idler pully screws the idler down when you loosen it. I could be wrong but I know that most 4 liters i have done are this way no tensioner just an idler pully that slides down when you loosen it. If it does have a tensioner then you should be able to use a 1/4 in ratchet. Insert into the hole on the end of the tensioner and pull back. I wrote to someone before about how to change a belt on a jeep. This is what I said.

Loosen that bolt and the idler pully will slide down taking tensioin off the belt. Do this until you fel the belt is loose enough to remove. Once you have the belt off put new belt back on follow the diagram on the sticker under the hood. Follow the steps in reverse order to tighten. First tighten the bolt until the belt can be twisted about 1/4 to 1/2 side to side. once the belt is tight enough go ahead and tighten the nut on the idler pully and your done. Before you start it is helpfull to look at the bolt on the back and look where the threads are this helps you to get correct tension. also make sure you have the sticker for the diagram under the hood before you start. If you sont make sure you draw the belt or get one. It can be a pain to put back if you have no diagram. Well sorry so long but wanted to be specific. Following questions are regarding 1998 Toyota corolla LE model.
1. Service center with Toyota dealer recommends me to change the serpentine belt and he quotes $135 for it. When I contacted another service center, they said that there were three kind of serpentine belts (one for air conditioning and others for something else) and questioned which one needs to be replaced. But, my toyota dealer says there is only one serpentine belt. Does anyone know how many serpentine belts found in 1998 Toyota corolla LE model? If more than one kind, any idea which one the toyota dealer refers to?
2. Toyota dealer recommends me to change Timing belt and quotes $350 for it. When I contacted other service center, they said there was no timing belt in 1998 Toyota corolla LE, but it had Timing chain and it didn't have to be replaced in the lifetime of the car. Who is correct?

A 98 Corolla has a timing chain and a serpentine belt. The belt usually lasts around 60,000 miles or so, although I have had to change them at about 45K at times. Basically, just look at the grooved side of the belt where it goes around one of theh pulleys. If it has cracks running across any of the ribs in the belt, it is time to change it. If not, unless it is very noisy it will go for a while longer. The timing chain is what I call the %26quot;new generation%26quot; of chains (which may date me!). Those chains last roughly forever. It will begin to make a rattling noise especially on start up before it needs to be relaced. It is true that if they break it will cause havok in your engine, but I have seen only one of that style break in 15 years, and they use that style now in Previas, Tacomas, Celicas, Corollas, Tundras, 4Runners, Camrys, and anything else with a chain in it, so I wouldn't worry about it.

It is time to change it, it is a 1998 car so it is more then 10 years old. More then likely, it has about 200,000 miles on it. I seem to remember it is every 100,000 miles it needs to be replaced. Take off the old belt - DO NOT CUT IT OFF - if you've purchased the wrong new belt your going to need the old one; aren't you?

If the car is cold when you first start it there is no way it could overheat within 2 miles. No way at all. I drove mine for around 7 miles the other day without the belt-did not even start to get hot. Just make it a straight trip-dont give the car time to warm up or anything. Just jump in it, start it and go. If that car would overheat and damage the engine within 2 miles i would buy you a new engine-cause i know it just cant happen. 20 miles might be pushing it--2 miles no way would it hurt anything.
On the other hand your serpentine belt turns your alternator which keeps your battery charged. Without it your battery could go dead quite quick leaving you stranded. I can figure out how to route the serpentine belt but am wondering how difficult it is and how to release the tensioner and how difficult it is to reapply that tension? Does it have to be a very specific amount of tension and how do I know when I am at that amount? I'm pretty confident about getting the belt off but don't want to be stuck with a car that I cannot put the belt back on, or properly at least. With the spring tensioner, you will need to check that the tensioner is holding the belt firmly on and the pulley turns freely. To check the tension, try twisting the belt around so the ribs face outward. You should be able to turn it some (45-90 deg) but not all the way upside down (180+ deg). If you can, the tensioner must be replaced. If it is the screw type tensioner, you need to add tension until you have the belt so you can turn it no more than 90 deg, then tighten the center screw. In either case if the tensioner pulley will not turn freely when you have the belt off you will have to replace the tensioner.

You should be able to release some tension off the tension pulley and then you can work the belt off of each subsequent pulley. If you don't have a diagram of the pulley system I would suggest taking a picture or several so that you can make sure that it goes back on in the proper order.

well its got quite a few cracks on the inside, and i've noticed on crack on the outside that goes almost to both edges, from the middle of the flat side of the belt, i don't know if it's been changed in the life of the car lol, 116k miles, but i know it hasn't been in the 20k i've been driving it =p

How do I change the belts on a 2002 Toyota Sienna V6?
I was expecting to find a single serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner pulley. I have changed serpentine belts on many models with no problem. But this Sienna has two belts, not one. One belt drives the power steering pump. The second belt drives the alternator and A/C. I don't see a tensioner pulley on either belt. Do these belts work like old-fashioned V-belts belts where you tension them by loosening something (like the alternator) and then using a pry bar to tighten the belt? I have a 2001 Mazda Protege. Whenever I start the car, there is a chirping noise. A mechanic told me it was 2 belts that need replacing: the Serpentine belts. He recommended that I change them soon. The price of two belts is about $30 - $40, so the cost is not bad! Also get all your fluids checked, tire pressure checked, and spark plugs and air and oil filter changed if due!(check your owners manual for service intervals! Also get the water hoses checked and changed if needed, these can also leave you stranded!

However if there are no threads showing cracking on the underside or fraying of the belt you may be able to get a can of belt dressing and spray it with that found at any local auto parts store. That should stop the noise Without looking at it myself I can not determine if they need changed but given the cars age it wouldn't hurt. I don't know why everyone (well, except JonnyBoy) thinks your '91 Accord has a Serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner, because it doesn't.
Alternator
1. Loosen the alternator mounting nut/bolt and through-bolts.
2. Turn the adjusting nut until the proper belt tension is reached. Recheck the tension and readjust as required.
3. Tighten the mounting nut/bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the through-bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
4. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes. Recheck the belt tension and readjust as required.
Power Steering
1. Loosen the pump through-bolt and nut.
2. Turn the adjusting bolt until the desired tension is reached.
3. Tighten the through-bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) and the nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
4. Start the engine and turn the wheel lock-to-lock several times. Recheck the belt tension and readjust as required.

If you line a tooth or two up wrong, it could result in incorrect valve timing causing your valves to ram into your pistons! I suggest either sucking it up and go to the shop and pay for it...or if the belt isn't shredded/broken...run with it until it breaks (check it every time you drive it). When it breaks your water pump won't work neither will your alternator and condenser.

I don't know why everyone (well, except JonnyBoy) thinks your '91 Accord has a Serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner, because it doesn't.
Alternator
1. Loosen the alternator mounting nut/bolt and through-bolts.
2. Turn the adjusting nut until the proper belt tension is reached. Recheck the tension and readjust as required.
3. Tighten the mounting nut/bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the through-bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
4. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes. Recheck the belt tension and readjust as required.
Power Steering
1. Loosen the pump through-bolt and nut.
2. Turn the adjusting bolt until the desired tension is reached.
3. Tighten the through-bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) and the nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
4. Start the engine and turn the wheel lock-to-lock several times. Recheck the belt tension and readjust as required.

There is a small hole in the tensioner arm, and one in the tensioner housing, turn the tensioner with the wrench until these two holes line up, then insert the wire through the holes to lock the tensioner in place. Remove the belt, be sure to note how the belt is routed, draw a diagram if necessary. Put the new belt on, swing the tensioner a little bit to remove the wire, then slowly let the tensioner apply tension to the belt. After the belt is installed, give the engine a few quick cranks to make certain the belt is seated, when everything looks good, start the engine.

The serpentine belt is actually quite simple. Jack up the front of your Saturn, place it on stands with some chocks. Remove the front passenger side wheel.
From the wheel well, place a socket on the tensioner and turn it clockwise. A quarter turn should be enough to loosen the belt enough to slip it right off.
If you have a friend, or a third hand, hold the tensioner down while you slip the new belt on the same path as your previous belt.
HOWEVER, is your belt making noise? Is that why you're changing the sepentine belt? If so, chances are your tensioner needs to be changed. Be sure NOT to buy the Dayco brand of aftermarket tensioner. You're asking for trouble. The safest for your single cam Saturn is to use an OEM tensioner.

most cars have the drawing under the hood on how it loops around but as you look at your engine and notice the tight spaces to play with thats when it becomes hard. make sure you cool the engine off first.
From the wheel well, place a socket on the tensioner and turn it clockwise. A quarter turn should be enough to loosen the belt enough to slip it right off.
If you have a friend, or a third hand, hold the tensioner down while you slip the new belt on the same path as your previous belt.
HOWEVER, is your belt making noise? Is that why you're changing the sepentine belt? If so, chances are your tensioner needs to be changed. Be sure NOT to buy the Dayco brand of aftermarket tensioner. You're asking for trouble. The safest for your single cam Saturn is to use an OEM tensioner.

most cars have the drawing under the hood on how it loops around but as you look at your engine and notice the tight spaces to play with thats when it becomes hard. make sure you cool the engine off first.

Many vehicles with serpentine belt tensioners do have a hole to insert a breaker bar directly, but on yours you need to use a box end wrench or socket and breaker bar (preferred over a ratchet if at all possible). There is very little extra labor, and you don't want it to start leaking (requiring having to do the whole job again) before the next timing belt change, or, even worse, to seize and ruin the belt and your engine. you shouldn't have to change your idler pulley unless it is making noise or it is wobbling back and forth. to change the belt you need to loosen your tension pulley, it will probably slide toward the fire wall of the car. if the bolt loosens turn the other way. you do not want to take that pulley off unless you are ready to catch the tension spring. It is a easy job and I personally would not take it to a shop

I'm having a hell of a time trying to replace the serpentine belt on my 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera (6 Cylinder 3.3 liter).
Turns out my belt was worn out so my brother and I went to replace it. Problem is, we can't lift the tension pulley with a crowbar. We got so frustrated with the tension pulley that we just cut the old belt off. We were told the easiest way was to use a crowbar to lift the tension pulley and slide the belt on and off, that's worked on other cars in the family but not this one.
The tension pulley won't move an inch. We got the new belt on everything except the alternator and decided to pull up on the belt and (to our surprise) lifted the tension pulley just fine but now we can't use the crowbar to keep the pulley up long enough to slip the belt on the alternator.
We have to be doing something wrong and we don't want to lose any fingers with this flimsy system we're using now.

You need what is called a Serpentine Belt Removal tool. Not a Crow Bar! These tools are usually free of charge with a deposit at your local auto parts store. They have the specific fittings and extensions that will work with your tension pulley that are necessary to move it without damaging you or your motor.

May be wrong...but if I remember right. The idler pulley is fixed. and the tension adjustment is done with an adjuster bolt on the alternator. But it could have actually been on the back of the idler pulley. Loosen the center nut on the pulley and turn the adjuster bolt to move it up or down.

Your tensioner might have a small square hole in it somewhere. Insert either a 3/8%26quot; or 1/2%26quot; ratchet into that hole, whichever fits. The tensioner should move relatively easily.
As for how to reinstall the belt, I would find a different pulley than the alternator to be the last one to put the belt on. Reason being- the alternator has that extra little lip you have to pull the belt over. We got so frustrated with the tension pulley that we just cut the old belt off. We were told the easiest way was to use a crowbar to lift the tension pulley and slide the belt on and off, that's worked on other cars in the family but not this one.
The tension pulley won't move an inch. We got the new belt on everything except the alternator and decided to pull up on the belt and (to our surprise) lifted the tension pulley just fine but now we can't use the crowbar to keep the pulley up long enough to slip the belt on the alternator.
We have to be doing something wrong and we don't want to lose any fingers with this flimsy system we're using now.

You need what is called a Serpentine Belt Removal tool. Not a Crow Bar! These tools are usually free of charge with a deposit at your local auto parts store. They have the specific fittings and extensions that will work with your tension pulley that are necessary to move it without damaging you or your motor.

May be wrong...but if I remember right. The idler pulley is fixed. and the tension adjustment is done with an adjuster bolt on the alternator. But it could have actually been on the back of the idler pulley. Loosen the center nut on the pulley and turn the adjuster bolt to move it up or down.

Your tensioner might have a small square hole in it somewhere. Insert either a 3/8%26quot; or 1/2%26quot; ratchet into that hole, whichever fits. The tensioner should move relatively easily.
As for how to reinstall the belt, I would find a different pulley than the alternator to be the last one to put the belt on. Reason being- the alternator has that extra little lip you have to pull the belt over. If you moved it up but cant keep it up with a crow bar get a ring spanner on to the bolt and use that to leaver it up.Its virtually the same as a commodore engine
