How much for the ac compressor clutch repair cost?

How much will it cost for the AC compressor clutch repair for Olds Achieva 97 with 3.1 litre engine? Can I do the repair myself without disconnecting the AC lines? I guess I will have to take out the splash sheilds and loosen the serpentine belt.

Hoping that it should be considerably less in cost of the repair than the changing the AC compressor itself. How much for the ac compressor clutch repair cost?
You have not given the exact problem. In most cases, you will NOT be able to do it your self. R134a must be drained and recovered and unless you have an a/c machine, don't play with it. Get a quote from several shops and decide for your self.

Mechanic in Wrong? Car Over heated.?

I took my car, a 2004 Volkswagen beetle to the mechanic to change an engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT switch). They recommended I change the temperature gasket also since the car will already be taken apart (which was $100 extra), so I did.

They said I would need a serpentine belt soon also. So, I changed that. They also changed my oil and gave me a wheel alignment.

I took my car on a road trip about an hour away. Soon as we made it there, my AC stopped working and the car started over heating. So we parked it. We came outside an couple hours later, lifted the hood, and noticed there was no coolant in it at all. We figured that was the problem, put some some coolant in there and proceeded to go home.

On the interstate the hot light came on and my car started to have white smoke coming from the hood of the car. Not ever the tail pipe! We pulled over (almost got lifted by 18 wheelers) and put some more coolant and it was leaking out and kinda looked like there was coolant sprayed all over under the hood. We made it to the next exit. And right before we parked, a red oil light came on.

I towed it to the mechanic and they are saying it's my fault. And the coolant bypass housing has a hole in it and it had calcium in it. and now I need a new head gasket and maybe an engine.

I think its an awful coincidence my car never ever overheated and the day after I get it from them, it has all of these problems.

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED OR THEY DID, THAT CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN TO MY CAR???

I towed it away from the shop because when I went outside I noticed the battery was dead!!! The man was saying it would probaby over heat because he thought I was gonna drive it home. He didnt want to give me my part back. He lied to my dad about a core charge and tried to lie to me, but the other person butted in and said there is no core charge. So that was fishy.

Anyway, after I towed it home, i noticed it still didn't have any coolant in it. Is that normal for them to do that. And also, they killed my battery the first time I picked up. (Maybe because they left the doors and trunk wide open during the three trips it took them to fix my tail light.) So that makes it twice that they killed my battery which is still dead! Which shows how negligent they are....

Do you think all of this is their fault? And can you give me some theories on what happened so I can confront the owner?Mechanic in Wrong? Car Over heated.?
If you already had problems with them, you're a retard for bringing the car back to them.

Otherwise, they CANNOT cause a calcium deposit in your car.

Here is what happened.

You have a lot of problem with your car. You fixed some, which caused certain things to run more efficiently. By running more efficiently, it has caused other smaller problems, to become larger.

And now you have those to fix as well.

Also, let's consider something. You're engine temperature sensor needed replacement.

MAYBE the reason it never overheated before, was because your sensor was bad, and not giving you the proper readout. It was in fact overheating, but you just didn't know. Ever consider that?Mechanic in Wrong? Car Over heated.?
Boohoo. Looks like people still think I had the best answer.

The %26quot;New Beatles%26quot; have a lot of problems.

Because you said that the A/C went out, I want you to look at you serpentine belt. Is it loose? If the belt broke on your trip or is too loose, then that could have caused all your problems.

I believe your head gasket blew. That means that coolant can get into your engine and into your oil. This makes your oil worthless and your engine would then seize. If you got lucky, then the head gasket blew in a way that the coolant just leaves the engine but doesn't get into the oil. Then you just need a new head gasket. The first way you need a new engine, the second way you have the head gasket replace.Mechanic in Wrong? Car Over heated.?
The first clue is the a/c stopped working...usually a sign of an overheated car..or electrical problem that may have affected the cooling fans...either way should have stopped and checked it out...once the car started to overheat the pressure in the radiator probably exceeded 20PSI...more than enough to rupture a wekk part or hose...continuing to drive only made it worse...You never drive a car with an overheating problem...REGARDLESS...So what happened first is hard to say...who has more blame...You!! for continuing to drive it...What part would they not give you back??...as far as the rest goes you are probably right leaving the hood and trunl open probably drained the battery..Mechanic in Wrong? Car Over heated.?
I think they caused this. with all the extra work they recommended and charged you for then never fixed any problem. The calcium story sounds very fishy and a lie.It is very common for mechanic shops to lie to people who they know, dont know about cars. They did not check for leaks after they did the work. or they forgot to refill it with water. You will need to take it to some else that can tell you why it happened. dont tell them it was another shop, or they may not want to make trouble. tell them an aquaintance did it and you think they messed it up. then get there answer ans estimate in writing. if you choose to sue them you will need this type of documentation. take it a vw dealer or vw specialist so the report will be accepted as reliable. you will prob have to pay for the inspection. But it is something you will have to do.Mechanic in Wrong? Car Over heated.?
You cannot use anything but genuine VW coolant in this car. Read this again!! YOU CANNOT USE ANYTHING BUT VW COOLANT IN THIS CAR. Mixing it with another coolant will cause a chemical reaction that could look like calcium deposits. It WILL damage the head gasket and the radiator and heater core. To the best of my knowledge of these cars, there is no $100 temperature gasket. They burned you. I have a feeling that you did NOT go to a genuine VW dealer or even a genuine VW experienced technician. When you resolve this problem, you will probably need to have your operating computer re-programmed. VW operating computers must be told that something under the hood has changed. Sometimes an inexperienced mechanic will leave hoses disconnected or will not double check their work. Also, you SHOULDN'T be using any other oil in this car but Mobil One, or ELF oil, that meets SPECIFICATION 502/505. Read you manual 4 times!!!!! You are also overdue for a brake fluid (VW only fluid) change.Mechanic in Wrong? Car Over heated.?
it sounds like too much pressure built up and it blew the head gasket. now you can see why i work on my own car. i don,t trust these people that calls themselfs mechanics. a lot of them are wannabees.

How do I get the tentioner back in place after changing my water pump?

You have air in your coolant system. What you do is unscrew your cold fill cap and the coolant reservoir. You can use a 1/4 socket drive to unscrew the cold fill cap.Once you do that pour in your coolant through the cold fill valve until your reservoir is full. You'll then start to see all the air bubbles being forced out. Those 4.6 dohc really put out heat so those air pockets can be a real headache but trust me thats exactly what it is.My 2000 lincoln continental is overheating again and i have had the thermostat changed and the radiator and?

Also thanks for the advice on how to install a serpentine belt on this jeep

the tensioner deal on the serpentine belt kind of makes me nervousHow is the best way to change a water pump on a %26039;98 caravan 3.3 liter engine?
The serpentine belt tensioner is not hard to deal with. They make a tool that makes it easy to move it, to allow the belt to be taken off.

The water pump itself is located in the front of the engine, near the bottom. The best way to gain access to it is to remove the left front wheel, and the inner fender liner. Remove the pulley, and the pump itself is held in with bolts. These bolts are very thin, and if you are not careful you can break them off in the housing. That will require the bolts to be drilled out, so you want to avoid that if possible. There is limited room to get a drill in.

If you are not comfortable with the belt, you really may want to consider paying a shop to change the water pump. If they break a bolt or three, they have to do the drilling and tapping at no additional charge.

I work on my own cars. I pay to have the 3.3 water pump replaced, because over half of them have the bolts break.

  • How do I know if my timing belt has broken?

I'm currently driving a 1999 Toyota Camry CE, running on a 4 cylinder engine, and my check engine light just came one. Recently I had my spark plugs replaced, the radiator/hoses, fan belts, and serpentine belts done, but the mechanic I went to warned me that my timing belt should be coming up since it should have been done at 150,000, and I'm at 160,000 miles. I was wondering if anyone has any idea if it may be the timing belt, i did not notice any change in my car as i was driving except for hearing a tiny bit of clicking coming from behind my dashboard. If it is broken, how much should I look forward to paying?

Side Note, they also told me I needed to get a gasket cap replaced, told me it isn't pertinent, but could that cause a check engine light to spring up?How do I know if my timing belt has broken?
First off, I've never heard of a gasket cap.

Second, I doubt any gasket your make your engine light come on.

Third, it's a little convenient that you just passed the mileage maintenance and they are just more than happy to help.

It depends on when the last time the belt was done. If you don't know and you have the cash to do it, then go ahead. If you don't then start saving for one.

These days, the only way you are going to know if your timing belt busted is when your car stops working, then you have real engine damage. How do I know if my timing belt has broken?
Timing belts usually need replaced every 50k miles. I'm not familiar with belts. But I learned that timing %26quot; chains rarely ever need to be changed. I think if your engine has a rough idle or misfires that could be symptoms of a worn timing belt. How do I know if my timing belt has broken?
if a timing belt fails the engine will not start. it should be done at 60-80,000 miles. if you have not had it done yet, get it done! which %26quot;gasket cap%26quot; a gas cap can trigger that light. How do I know if my timing belt has broken?
it isnt broken yet if your car is still running and as far as that clicking noise idk wut that isHow do I know if my timing belt has broken?
Your timing belt isn't broken cuz then you wouldn't be driving. I recently changed mine and it costed a little less than 1k.How do I know if my timing belt has broken?
If your timing belt breaks while you're driving it can ruin your engine. Tends to bend the valves. This belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and if it breaks you won't be going anywhere unless you happen to be on the top of a hill and can coast. It definitely needs to be replaced while it isn't broken and if it has a lot of miles on it do it soon. costs can vary all over the place. shop around. The belt itself is probably 15-30 dollars at an auto parts store but this isn't really a do it yourself job unless you're pretty experienced with engine work. The engine light can be literally hundreds of things so you need to get the codes read and go from there.

Is this quote "sound" for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?

    Hey everyone--

I am getting ready to replace my timing belt (80k), and I got quotes from several places. How much would you pay to get the job done?

The dealership quotes 795 with the belt, tensioner, water pump, and an oil change, where an independent mechanic quotes that he'd do the water pump, timing belt, serpentine belt, coolant flush, tensioner for 650. Is this good, or can it be better? Is this quote %26quot;sound%26quot; for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?
That sounds like a decent deal. You probably don't need a serpentine belt though so ask if he can lower the price for that. Most of the time when the serpentine belt goes it'll squeal. Is this quote %26quot;sound%26quot; for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?
the dealer will charge you an arm and a legg you can try a regular service station like easy lube or jiffy lube to do it and you can get the parts yourself from Kragen or Autozone. the belt itself should be around $30-40 and the labor should be around 100-150, but if you change your timing belt I suggest you change the water pump as well the labor shouldnt be that different (water pump is located in the middle of the timing belt) and since you have to chamge the water pump at some point anyway you can save on the labor cost. the pump itself is around $100-150

check for the prices at: http://shop.oreillyauto.com/PartTypes.asIs this quote %26quot;sound%26quot; for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?
LISTEN GIRLFRIEND!!! DO IT!!!! I just had my timing belt go (at 125K) after being an idiot and not getting it done sooner - like you are. The quote sounds a little high BUT based on my very latest experience it is necessary...dealerships are higher but supposedly better at fixing VW's. I'd try looking all over VW.com and ask the service counter about discounts--look at dealership website/newspapers/etc. I get service stuff in the mail a lot. Sign up for everything and register your VW online. Is this quote %26quot;sound%26quot; for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?
This is a good deal. I spent close to $1000, for my Audi timing belt change, that included a H20 pump, coolant, thermostat, rollers, and tensioner.

The proper tool makes the job super easy. Auto parts stores and Sears has a serpentine belt removal bar tool that allows you to gain terrific safe leverage on the belt tensioner pulley. The tensioner can be rotated easily with the furnished bar by either a 3/8 square hole next to the tensioner pulley or the center metric bolt of the actual pulley. These kits include a few metric shallow well sockets and a few crows foot open end wrenches that snap on the end of the tensioner bar.Where can I find a step by step manuel on how to change an auto part?

The 3000 mile oil change is pretty much a myth but in your case you should change it once a year at least.

How much does it cost and how long does it take to replace a Serpentine Belt on a 1999 Ford Taurus SE?

I have a 1999 Ford Taurus SE and I just had the Serpentine Belt replaced. My question is - how long does the job take and how much should it be (ballpark)... The guy I went to I really wasn't crazy about and feel like he ripped me off - I just want to know so I know if I should ever go to him again... He charged me $39 for the part and $50 in labor... I thought the job should only take 10 - 15 minutes so the labor shouldn't have been that much, but he insisted it was a longer job... The whole bill came to $89 and change... Or am I wrong and this is in the ballpark? How much does it cost and how long does it take to replace a Serpentine Belt on a 1999 Ford Taurus SE?
Good deal; You must live in an area where labor is cheaper. Average is over $100. You can do it cheaper if you have your own tools and do it yourself. How much does it cost and how long does it take to replace a Serpentine Belt on a 1999 Ford Taurus SE?

  • Harmonic balancer/serpentine belt problem?

About a week ago, I started hearing a rattling sound when I turned on my air conditioner. I took it to the shop to get the oil and fluids changed and asked them to look at it. They said my car was fine, but needed it's 70000 mile check up. Three days later, my electrical problems light came on and my ac died. About an hour later the car stopped running in the middle of nowhere. I managed to get back home, but my car is still in the town where I broke down and the mechanic is saying that my harmonic balancer and serpentine belt are missing. What is a harmonic balancer? Is it likely that it would just fall off? How much should it cost to get it replaced? I have no idea if I can trust this mechanic and no way to get a second opinion without paying for a four hour tow to a shop closer to home. Please give me some advice on how to handle this....Harmonic balancer/serpentine belt problem?
I'm not sure what type of vehicle you are refurring to. On all vehicles though, the harmonic balancer is the crank shaft pully. This turns the drive belt(s) On most vehicles they will come apart and lose the belt. What causes this on most vehicles, the harmonic balancer has a rubber dampener made into it. The rubber will get worn and break apart then the pully comes off along with the belt. They will cause a rattling sound before it comes off also. It will cause you to loose power steering, A/C, sometimes water pump, depending on vehicle, and alternator wont charge.Harmonic balancer/serpentine belt problem?
The harmonic balance is connected to the end of the crank shaft and is used to tranmit the power to the rest of your accessories through the serpentine belt.

Harmonic balances don't typically just fall off, and though it is possible as some of them have a rubber connection that fails, you definitely would have heard something if it had truly fallen off, not to mention probably have a hole or very bad dent some where in your car.

Odds are the serpentine belt was lose, maybe the tensioner is bad and the serpentine belt fell off. You'll need the serpentine belt to drive the accessories. It's possible that one of the accessories (ie, A/C compressor Siezed and caused the belt to come off)

How much is he charging? Obviously the first thing to try is to simply replace the serpentine belt and see if it works.

If replacing the belt appears to work, I would drive it home that way, but minimize my use of all the accessories. (ie don't use the A/C, minimize use of electrical items) until I determined why the belt fell off initially.

Where is the Serpentine Belt located on a 1996 Mercury Sable?

Every single time I take my sable into the mechanic I some how end up with either having to already pay $100 to get it fixed or $100 and up to get in fixed within the next week. Yesterday I brought my car in for an oil change, and walked out with a diagnosis for 5 computer codes, all nothing that would harm my vehicle but needed to be fixed, an oil leak, and the serpentine belt being cracked not only that but my power steering is supposedly going out and all the pressure hosing. I have a full tank of power steering fluid and haven't been low on oil so I'm a little bit nervous because this seems to happen to much!Where is the Serpentine Belt located on a 1996 Mercury Sable?
front of the engineWhere is the Serpentine Belt located on a 1996 Mercury Sable?
Look under the hood of the car. As soon as you open the hood. It is looking right at you. Its the big belt that goes around everything. It is black in color and 2 inches wide.Where is the Serpentine Belt located on a 1996 Mercury Sable?
It's a 96 sable, those cars have problems. Be thankful the transmission hasn't gone out yet, it will. The Power Steering pump can have fluid in it and still be bad, the way to tell is by listening to the pump while turning the wheel. The serpentine belt is the belt that goes around all of the pulleys on the front of the engine. Depending on where the leak is, it can be an easy fix. Crawl under there and look for any fresh oil at the highest point, hose it off if you have to. If it is coming from the oil pan, it's a cheap fix it yourself deal. If it is coming from between the engine and transmission, it is better left to a mechanic. As for the computer codes, Autozone can help you with that.

How much can I expect to pay to get serpentine belt replaced 2002 Ford Explorer??

I was wondering how much can i expect to pay for my serpentine belt to be replaced. I had taken it to Jiffy Lube for an oil change and they told me it had some small tears and would need replaced asap. I asked them if that was the noise i had been hearing and they said yes it could have been it. They roughly quoted me 79.99 of course thats w/o labor. Does anyone know how much I can expect to pay and any possible cheap placed in Columbus, Ohio I could take it to?

Thanks :)How much can I expect to pay to get serpentine belt replaced 2002 Ford Explorer??
Jesus Christ!! Go to any parts store. It shouldn't be more than $30. Tell Jiffy Lube to piss off! And changing the belt is relatively easy. Under the hood is a belt routing diagram. It will show you everything you need to know.

You will be charged around $45 for labor no matter where you go.

If you want to buy your own belt from place %26quot;A%26quot; and get in installed at place %26quot;B%26quot;, expect ot hear something like this: %26quot;Since thats not our part, we can't offer any warranty on the belt. If something goes wrong, we won't be able to help you.%26quot; Tell them thats fine. If you go to an Advance Auto Parts (not sure if they are up there) you will be offered 2 types. 1 has a 90 day warrany, the other (more $$$ and better) has a 1 year. You want that one. And if it does fail, you can make a warranty claim w/ Advance Auto. They don't advertise this, but its a reality.

And save yourself some money and sweettalk the parts store into helping you. If they're not busy, odds are they will help you out. I know I did

How can you check if the tension assembly for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced in an Oldsmobile?

I had the water pump replaced (under warranty) because it was leaking/spraying. The mechanic said I had to replace the serpentine belt, too, because when antifreeze gets on it, it will no longer work well. So, I agreed to that. The belt was not covered by warranty, but I figured it was good insurance to change it. When I picked up the car, I was told that the tension assembly for the serpentine belt was also wearing out and that I should replace that also. That also would be not covered by the warranty. Is it likely that there is this problem also? How can I check that there is a problem with the tension assembly without just taking the word of the mechanic? How can you check if the tension assembly for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced in an Oldsmobile?
If you get any squeeling or noises from the belt you need a new tensioner as they do wear out, usually one bolt takes them off and then just reinstall the new one and about $65 for the part depending on your application. How can you check if the tension assembly for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced in an Oldsmobile?
I usually pull on the belt while watching the pulley/tensioner if it flexes away from or towards the engine it is bad. If it binds when trying to remove or tension the belt it is bad also. But I do not understand why the water pump is under warranty and the tensioner is not.How can you check if the tension assembly for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced in an Oldsmobile?
Usually you can tell if it makes a squeaking noise, indicating the bearings or bushings are wearing out. You can normally pull it back by its spring and rotate it. If it doesn't free-wheel, try squirting some WD-40 or a little oil near the hub and try again. If that doesn't work, you can probably bet the bearings are bad. It's pretty common to find one in your local junk yard, because I believe this assembly is common to many GM cars. How can you check if the tension assembly for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced in an Oldsmobile?
THE TENSIONER IS BASICALLY A BIG SPRING,IT KEEPS TENSION ON THE BELT AT ALL TIMES.IF IT IS GOING BAD YOU CAN GRAB THE BELT AND PULL ON IT,IF THE TENSIONER MOVES TOO FREELY IT WOULD BE WISE TO CHANGE IT.AN EASY REPAIR TO DO.SOMETIMES THE TENSIONER WILL LOCK UP AND NOT MOVE FREELY AT ALL.IF YOU CANT DO THE REPAIR YOURSELF IT DOESNT COST THAT MUCH TO HAVE SOME ONE DO IT FOR YOU.DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE,IM IN ILLINOIS COST INSTALLED ABOUT 100.How can you check if the tension assembly for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced in an Oldsmobile?
Most GM serpentine belt tensioners have markings on the tensioner body to indicate that they are functioning within specification. You will see two marks on the inside half of the tensioner body, and one mark on the outside half (closest to the belt). As long as the single mark is lined up between the two inner marks, your tensioner is wthin specification and does not require replacement.

You can only observe this while the part is installed on the car, while under tension from the drive belt. It is impossible to ascertain once the part has been removed, which sounds like that is the case in your situation. FWIW, serpentine belt tensioner failure IS quite common on GM 2.8/3.1/3.4/3.8 engines, I've replaced many. Hope this helps! How can you check if the tension assembly for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced in an Oldsmobile?
1--if your water pump was leaking, you probably only needed a gasket...nice it was under warrantyu.

2--anti-freeze on a belt WILL NOT RUIN IT, belts are constantly bombared with junk all of the time, the mechanic lie to make money, he probably cleaned it!

3--tension on a serpentine belt does not wear out...you need a real mechanic..someone who not trying to get all the money out of you...tension on a belt is spring loaded....--stick a rular down next to the belt..start the belt at a number, make it level as possible, push it down with your finger..usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch play...when u push down.....How can you check if the tension assembly for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced in an Oldsmobile?
i have a oldsmobile too. if the belt is loose, then the tensioner needs replaced, because thats what keeps the right tension on the belt at all times.if the belt is loose, then you were told right.

I'm changing the altenator on my 1994 jeep cherokee and I need to know how to loosen the serpentine belt?

Do we have a 5.2, 5.9 or 4.0? Makes a difference. If it is a 4.0, there is a pulley with a jack screw just below the power steering pump. How to change a serpentine in a 2001 Nissan Sentra SE?

The belt is getting some wear and squeals a good bit when i start the car. Getting tired of the sound and was going to change them. Before anyone tells me to take it to a garage or something. I don't feel like spending a lot of money on something that costs almost nothing to do. Plus I like to learn about how everything works and what everything is and working on my own cars by myself allows me to do this. I just want a legit answer so i can get this done and be on my way. Thank YouHow to change a serpentine in a 2001 Nissan Sentra SE?
The instructions are usually right on the engine.

You'll need a wrench to pull back the tension bar/sprocket. The old one will then slide right off. Then put the new one back on the same way. Pay attention to the chart and how you took the old one off.

Get a buddy to help you, if you try to hold the tension bar back with one hand while trying to remove/replace the belt, and it slips, it can flip the wrench into your face and give you a good smack. My buddy Ryan got stitches like this. How to change a serpentine in a 2001 Nissan Sentra SE?
A wrench or a socket in a ratchet will not do the job. The strut tower is too close to the tensioner. There's not enough room for a socket wrench and you'll wind-up eating a combination wrench as you cant get enough leverage. The spring inside the tensioner is very tough and strong.

Sears and any auto parts store sells a *serpentine belt tensioner tool which costs about $22.00. It's an 18%26quot; bar with a 3/8 drive in the end that will fit metric crows feet open ends or shallow-well 3/8 sockets that come with the tool. With this high leverage tool the belt will come off and back on like melted butter.

The tool can be used on any car with a belt tensioner.

I have a 2001 ford mustang GT (4.6L V8 engine) and as of this morning the a/c does not work.?

The fan and everything else works but it does not put out cool air at all. The a/c was working yesterday and the only work i have done that has anything to do with the a/c was to change the serpentine belt and i checked the routing so i dont think that this would cause any problems with the compressor, especially since it has been about 4 days since i changed it. Has anyone else had this happen and what was the problem and how did you fix it? Any help is appreciated.I have a 2001 ford mustang GT (4.6L V8 engine) and as of this morning the a/c does not work.?
Sounds like your system has sprung a leak or has gotten too low on refrigerant. When the system gets too low, it shuts down so the compressor doesn't get ruined causing a very costly repair. I would get the vehicle to a reputable repair facility that employs ase master certified technicians and have the ac system checked out.I have a 2001 ford mustang GT (4.6L V8 engine) and as of this morning the a/c does not work.?
haha tipical FORD for you.I have a 2001 ford mustang GT (4.6L V8 engine) and as of this morning the a/c does not work.?
I agree with Will S, however I had this happen to me once and it turned out to be a loose connection at the wiring harness that supplied power to the compressor...just something you may check 1st, you never know.By the way check any wires you see going to the compressor by wiggling them as the ac is turned on and listen for the compressor to kick in...be careful and watch your hands as to not get them caught in the belt, etc...

it will most likely run about 600.00 to 800.00 dollars. you can also go into a shop and get a written estimate. and that is at no charge. make sure it includes the price of parts and book time labor.. book time labor is the recommended time to make repairs to your car. the ball joint is about an hour, the belt is about an hour, half hour for each wheel stud, and about 2.5 hours for your rear brakes depending on the e-brake shoes. good luck!!How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?
Parts, you're looking at about 300$ from autozone, expect about 350$ from an independent shop, 450$ from the dealer. I'd estimate about 5 hours of labor by the book, at 65$ an hour which is what most independent shops charge, you're looking at about 325$ in labor. The dealer may charge as much as 100$ an hour, sometimes more. How much will it cost to replace brakes, ball joint, wheel bolts and belt for a 99 VW beatle?

Rear brakes+ rotors (oem replacement around 150); ball joint at least 100, wheel bolts? Under 20. Serp belt about 30-40. But the installation is going to kill you 4 hours by book? About that...

At least 500 altogether at an indy shop.

I have a couple questions about a 94 chevy caprice?

how difficult is it to change out a serpentine belt in a 94 caprice, also how much does a ac compressor run for one of these cars.I have a couple questions about a 94 chevy caprice?
You don't even need a friend to help change it, take a sharp knife to the old one, and it comes off EASY.

There is a specialty tool for belt tensioners, but I have never used one.

All I use is a ratchet if I can get it on or a box end wrench and a pipe for leverage if needed.

Your first responder is correct in that it will take a professional shop to do the repair. You may be able to get a deal from where ever you buy the compressor.

Good luckI have a couple questions about a 94 chevy caprice?
The serpentine belt is easy. All it takes is a ratchet handle and a friend. You relieve the tension and he slides the old belt off and slides the new one on. The A/C compressor will run you about $250 for the part, but it will take a pro with specialty tools to install it, vacuum the system, and recharge it. Total cost might be as high as $500. Good luck.I have a couple questions about a 94 chevy caprice?
13mm socket on a decent 3/8%26quot; drive rachet is all you need to change serpentine belt.

as far as AC, a compressor usually will run $250 plus depending on where you get it from. IT's recommended to buy new orifice tube and drier. As long as the AC comp is the only thing at fault (IE no holes in evaporator or condenser), you can buy manifold gauges, and a vacuum pump at Harbor freight for under $100. Get the right comp oil, and the right amount of 134a. Get a haynes manual, and with a little ability you can probably change out the compressor yourself. Plently of directions on how to pull down the system and charge it yourself.

Don't know exactly which part you're talking about, but the other members seemed to be on the right track. (John Paul and HobbaBob) I'm guessing the same. You probably need to replace the Top Engine Mount (also called the Top Torque-Axis Mount). It is held by three bolts (to the engine), and two bolts to the frame, and has hard vulcanized rubber in the middle, right?

If so...That's the part you'll need. (Upper Engine Mount, Saturn Part 21012185)

Next time you want to change the belt, you don't have to remove the engine mount (as you'll need to hold up your engine with a jack (usually on the oil pan) to take the engine mount on and off). You technically need to loosen and re-tighten the lower mount after you've removed the upper mount.

The best way is actually to take off the passenger side front wheel, and remove the plastic splash guard panel. From there you will have clear access to the tensioner. You can just slip a socket on the tensioner, turn clockwise to loosen the tensioner... and the belt will slide right off. You can replace the belt with the same technique. One thing to note though... if you replaced the belt because it was %26quot;squealing%26quot;, you probably should have replaced the tensioner along with it.

I'll find some links for you to review.

You need a special tool. They will have it at Auto Zone, etc. There is a tensioner which is getting in your way, you use the tool to pull it back and then the belt easily slips on

You can probably borrow the tool, to buy it is about $50, but you need it for every belt changeHow to get the serpentine belt on a 94 ford Taurus??????
well what you do need are sockets or hand tools, and you'll need to losen the parts that your belt goes to so that youll be able to fit it on there...How to get the serpentine belt on a 94 ford Taurus??????
There is a pulley that is used for tensioning the belt. I think is uses a 14mm Allen wrench. Install the belt over all the pullys except the tensioner, then use the wrench to pull the tensioner inwards toward the center of the motor and slip the belt over the pulley and release the tension on it and you're done.

I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?

A few months ago, I noticed my oil was low, so I bought 5 qts of cheap oil and added it to my engine instead of taking it for an oil change. It ran fine for the past few months..This weekend I had my water pump, serpentine, and timing belts changed. The mechanic told me, the motor oil was overfilled and recommended I get an oil change. There wasn't any oil leak. So today I had a high mileage oil change at WalMart. They also told me my oil was over filled when they checked it, and that I have an oil leak.Again, yesterday there was no leaks. Now I have a big oil leak, and my car shuts off when I am idle. What could have happened? Did walmart mess up my oil change? or could it have been the mechanic who changed my belts? or am I to blame for being cheap and changing my oil myself and overfilling it without changing the filter?.Also how do I fix this. Please HelpI overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
overfilling is just as bad as not enough. and you should always change the oil filter whenever you change the oil. just unscrew your oil plug and let some run out, into a container or course.I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
Overfilling the oil can damage the piston rings among other things. I suggest draining the oil to the correct level. I would never change the oil without changing the filter. You car must have been almost empty of oil to require that much oil.I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
1 stop trying to blame others for your lack of car care

2 sometimes stuff happens..[ie you walk into a room,,turn on lite,,bulb blows...whos fault? no one]

3 overfilling oil can cause leaks,,bearing damage,,,

4 maybe you need tune up.....I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
You live and learn by your mistakes, check your valve covers and clean up the engine to isolate the leak. And do what you can to fix.I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
Yes it can damage your seals and you need to look to find the source of the leak the first two areas would be the drain plug bolt area sometimes when being replaced after removal it might not be as tight as it is supposed to be or it was over tightened and stripped, second area would be to look around the new filter area if their is oil leaking around where it is mounted in may not be on as tight as it should be, I have witnessed many times that the technician may have not removed the old filter seal and put another one on meaning you have two seals and the oil could be leaking from that area, the QUALITY OF A 6.00$ AN HOUR EMPLOYEE AT WALL MART or any other company is risky at best, go back to wall mart do not let any one touch the car except because you stated they changed the oil and you did not have a leak prior to the change ask them to re inspect the bolt on the drain pan and the filter area, ask them if the can determine the area where the oil may be coming from if it is a steady leak the should be able to (with flashlights) to determine where it may be coming from, also be Leary if the striped the bolt many times the will not tell you because they were the last company to work in that area and they do not want to eat the repair if needed. Take notes of what they tell you so you can see if they are contradicting any of their responses to you. I do know over filling the oil can lead to many problems with several Items. What kind of car and engine do you have and did the oil leak start after the water pump was changed .. but by all means you need to determine where is the leak coming from that is the starting point ,then we can determine at what stage or part of the repair that may have caused this leak

Remember since you are losing oil check the oil level first thing in the morning before you start the car, you may have to add a little oil to get to your next destination and this is serious as if the oil is dripping on the exaust area it could cause you car to catch on fire.

E-mail me and I will give you my phone so I can chat with you about this

HAVE A GOOD DAY, JackI overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
You did this but go and blame wallmart for your lack of knowledge.

Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?

1998 Toyota Corolla. Power steering greatly improved. Grumbling noises went down; but did not stop. How long is power steering on this car good for, or what to look for before it completely goes out?Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?
The bearing on the pump may be bad. It could be the tensioner pulley.

Import/Toyota power steering pumps last a really long time. 10 years old is not out of the question.

Pumps can be had for $150.

    Tensioner for about the same.

Labor is only about an hour or two for either.Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?
It the will make that noise untill you get all the air out of the system. That is by turning the wheel to lock to the left or right, and the back to other lock. This mean as far the wheel will go. And hold the wheel there a few second. This will hap to be done about 5 times or more. Then check fluid, and top off. then do it again. It may take a few times to get all the air. If the noise does not stop the pump need to be replaced. And the same step used to get the air out.Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?
How long is it good for? It's a Toyota! I had a 1990 Corolla ... drove it hard... Sold it in 2002.. no problems with power steering. If it ran low on oil due to a leak, then maybe some damage has been done. does the sterring feel fine.. does it jerk in ur hand?

How do I change/replace the drive belt on a 1996 lincoln continental?

I'm having a great deal of difficulty accessing the belt in my 1996 Lincoln Continental. The problem is NOT the routing of the belt (I have a copy of that diagram, %26amp; DO understand how to read it). I am already familiar w/ the principal behind removing %26amp;/or replacing serpentine belts (%26quot;drive-belts%26quot;) in other FMC (Ford Motor Co) vehicles, equipped w/ automatic tensioners but, this time, my ability to physically %26quot;get-to%26quot; the belt is the challenge! I have performed this procedure on one of each of the %26quot;FLM 'Trio' %26quot; (a 1999 Ford [Crown Vic'], a 1996 Lincoln [Town Car] %26amp;, a 1999 Mercury [Gr Marquis]). The design of the engine compartment of the 1996 Linc'n Continental however, is MUCH different than that of %26quot;The Trio%26quot;, in-that all of the engine components in th Linc'n Cont'l are so compacted/close together, that it's nearly impossible to even get the tensioner-release-tool into position to %26quot;rotate%26quot; the tensioner-- Let alone getting a hand/arm in there, to pull the belt out (or put a new one in[!]). . . . . There's TOO MUCH... %26quot;Stuff%26quot; in the way!!!

My best guess would be to unbolt the pwr steering reservoir (w/o draining it) %26amp;, temporarily moving it out of the way. ALL the info I've found on the net AND even in the (Dealership Mechanics') Factory Svc Manual, basically says %26quot;...loosen tensioner, remove the old belt, route the new belt over the pulleys, using the diagram affixed to the bottom of the hood...%26quot; But, how the heck do I get in there, in the first place???!!!

Thanks, in advance! How do I change/replace the drive belt on a 1996 lincoln continental?
well what kind of tool are you using..theres a serpentine belt tool u can use from autozone specifically for that model...

OK step 1 find a idler belt pully that has a square sholder on it,this is the adjuster,it should have a 3/8 o1/2 ratched hole in it. Step 2 Find a tool to fit in it , move it up or down. You will see it losen the belt in one direction. Step 3 Once you find out, losen tention, ease belt off alt, because it is the smallest pully.Pay close attention how belt is routed.pay close att:to water pump belt routing very important!!! Take Belt with you to your nearest advanced auto parts dealer or auto zone or NAPA. Let the tech match up belt for you. Step 4 reverse the process.Be carfull not to get finger under belt when setting tention. Leave alt pully for last.If you do not have a belt routing digram ask for a copy at auto parts .Good luck and GOD Bless... hoped i've helped.....

If you look on the engine there will be a belt tensioner pulley that is smaller than the other pulleys. this is spring loaded and adjusts by use of a 3/8%26quot; ratchet. you line up the new belt and release the tension on the pulley, and then install belt around the pulleys and then let the tension come back by letting the tensioner %26quot;go%26quot;. the spring loaded action should give your belt the proper amount of tension. First you need a long wrench or a regular wrench with a cheater bar that will fit the idler pulley. Install the belt according to the diagram under the hood leaving out the idler pulley. When the belt is around all pulleys, use the wrench to rotate the idler pulley until you can get the belt underneath of it. It is there to create tension. Thats the only way anybody does it.

V and Serpentine belt in my Dodge neon?

I went to get my oil changed and the mechanic said that my v belt and my serpentine belt are recommended to get changed. What exactly do these belts do? About how much do they cost to replace? Will i know when one of them goes out if i wait to replace it? ThanksV and Serpentine belt in my Dodge neon?
They are two types of belts that do the same thing-drive the various things that cars have on them-AC compressors, alternators, airpumps, power steering pumps, and sometimes even vacuum pumps.

Being rubber, they have a limited lifespan, and should be replaced about every 3 years.

Can I have some info regarding with getting a new belt tensioner?

Ok here is the story. I have a 1999 Chevy Camaro w/ 104,000 miles. About one month ago the serpentine belt came off and I went to a mechanic who had one of the pulleys changed and serpentine belt replaced.

About one month later the belt had come off the pulleys again. I brought it to the mechanic and he said that I needed to replace something called the belt tensioner.

    questions

-Is it normal for the belt tensioner to go wrong in a high mileage vehicle after replacing the serpentine belt?

-how much should this cost? He quotes me at $340 altogether with part and labor

-About two weeks ago every time I had started the car it sounded like there was a squealing noise coming from the belt. This happened only when I started the car after it have been sitting overnight, and the noise went away after the car warmed up a bit. Could this have been related to the belt tensioner? Can I have some info regarding with getting a new belt tensioner?
belt tensioner shoul dhav ebeen replace when belt was many do this since that might have been why it snap in first place they go bad alot and yes thats whats tightens belt and loose belt squeals not hard to replace on many cars and not real high to buy mine is like 30 bucks call autozone ask you can get a how to replace it print out if you ask or look it up online at home get a place near a price and get a how to do it online top of their page says do it yourself type in your car infoCan I have some info regarding with getting a new belt tensioner?
Well the tension-er was more then likely the problem all along this may be to tight or to loose there is a spring in the tension-er this would cause problems with the belt the idler pulley can lock up or slip usually do to a bad bearing or a something on the pulley. So I would replace the tension-er and this wil fix your problem no more belt coming off.Can I have some info regarding with getting a new belt tensioner?
    HI

I would be curious as to what pulley he replaced?? Pulley's don't usually ware out. The thing that would ware out would be the tensioner pulley. Over time and heat the spring in it can lose it tension.

    good luck

How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 1989 Suburban?

I am trying to change the water pump and can't work out how to loosen the serpentine belt. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 1989 Suburban?
You need the following tool: Sears and any auto parts store has a serpentine belt tensioner removal tool. It's a 1%26quot; wide by 3/16 bar - 24 inches long. It has a raised 3/8 square drive on one end with several shallow metric and crows foot metric wrench ends that will fit every belt tensioner out there to ease the tension spring inside the pulley housing so you'll easily be able to remove and reinstall the belt after changing the water pump. How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 1989 Suburban?
there should be a belt tensioner on it. you put a ratchet in it and move it and it loosens. take it to autozone and they'll tell you for sure. How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 1989 Suburban?
take a breaker bar and socket and put on the bolt on the tensioner wheel, pull on it and loosen the belt. 1 way it tightens and the other way it loosens. How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 1989 Suburban?
look for the idler pullyHow do I losen the serpentine belt on a 1989 Suburban?
15mm bolt on the tensioner , it's the only place the belt makes contact that is not an accessory,ie alt,a/c power steerong pump.Put the 15mm on a breaker bar and push down on the tensioner and the belt will come loose. This is a two hand operation one hand on the breaker bar the other on the beltHow do I losen the serpentine belt on a 1989 Suburban?
look at your belt diagram on the radiator brace. it should show you which pully is the tensioner... make sure you get it and not the idler as the idler doesn't move. the suburban uses a 3/8 drive ratchet to leverage it, i THINK that pushing the handle to the passengers side of the truck will release pressure, slide the belt off, change the pump, put the belt back on.

I once had all the owners manuals scanned so I could printout them for customers who lost or had damaged manuals. I put them online years ago as a good Samaritan thing. I got spanked by BMW and they had it removed. Everywhere you go online is a bait and switch situation when your trying to get free information from an owners manual. Years ago everything was free now they charge. The upside is these greedy people who think they are so smart are finding out people will NOT pay for this stuff.

    Ml350 Serpentine belt?

Hello, does anyone know if it easy or have some instructions on how to change the ML 350 Serpentine belt?

    ThanksMl350 Serpentine belt?
I would take it to a dealer, but I suppose I only say that because I am a tech and that is how we make money. If you insist on doing it yourself I would take a mental picture of how the belt is routed and then all you will need is a 3/8%26quot; drive ratchet and a 17mm socket to release the tensioner. The tensioner is on the right side of the crank pulley and the 17mm hex head is underneath the belt. It's really easy, but I have changed a million of them so I would say you shouldn't have to much trouble with it.Ml350 Serpentine belt?
Easy, as long as the diagram is still under your hood. There should be a sticker near the radiator showing the routing of the belt. You insert a ratchet wrench, usually 3/8%26quot; drive in a hole in the front of the tensioner pulley and relieve tension on the belt. Take off the old one and put on the new one. Release the wrench and the tensioner should resume it's job. That is, if this car is like all the others with a serpentine belt.

Do i really have to get a oil change every three months?

... or every 3000 miles or whatever it is. honestly i dont know squat about cars and when i go to get my oil changed the guys at the shop are always telling me i need this and that its expensive, i really think they are jerking my chain b/c i changed my fluids one visit (the pink stuff) and went to a different oil change shop for my next visit and they said i needed it again because it was dirty, well obviously i didn't do it, but seriously are they just trying to get my money? how many times do i need to change my serpentine belt in a year? if that's even what its called, sorry. well all in all i have a 98 grand prix and it has high mileage and i do get it changed every three to four months, but is it really necessary? i always make sure to check the oil and make sure its full, add oil if need be..my friend has a similar car and changes his oil every 6 to 8 months and his car seems fine ..but guys please help! im sick of getting ripped offDo i really have to get a oil change every three months?
Yeah, 3000 miles or 3 months is correct, but you don't have to be a fanatic about it. A few hundred miles or so over ain't gonna kill the car. Letting the quick lube guys change the oil is fine. Just don't listen to anything they say about %26quot;you need this, that, and the other.%26quot; They are just trying to make a buck off of people like yourself that don't know any better. Not trying to offend you there, just saying, you know. Find a good local mechanic to do your other work for you. Find someone that knows a little about cars to show you a few things you can check on your own, such as the condition of the serpentine belt you mentioned. Those belts should last for YEARS! You should really know how to check your own oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, antifreeze/coolant, tire pressures, etc. Checking and maintaining these things is absolutely critical to your cars health.Do i really have to get a oil change every three months?
it depends on how you drive

if you like to drive fast you would change it every 3000 miles

If its jus average driving like to work and keepingur speed right on the speed limit

than ya about every 5000 milesDo i really have to get a oil change every three months?
yeah, do the same as your friend. 5000~7000 miles in between will be okay to me. Oil and modern engines has improved a lot since the '80s.Do i really have to get a oil change every three months?
yeah you have to do your oil chage, if you want to keep your car running.Do i really have to get a oil change every three months?
If its a new car you should but its really not that big a deal.Do i really have to get a oil change every three months?
The oil change shops want you to do it that often, of course. It won't hurt to do it, and it's really cheap insurance. You can go 5,000 miles though. You might also ask what condition the oil is in when you have it changed. If it's really black and dirty, keep on with 3,000.

You might also think about doing it yourself. You can buy the oil and filter for about $15, and it's kind of fun.Do i really have to get a oil change every three months?
Hey Keysha, i do agree with the other people about changing your own oil or finding a trustworthy mechanic. I noticed you mentioned that you dont know much about cars. It would be a great idea if you educated yourself just about that basics of cars just so you can understand what is going on when something comes up so you arent getting ripped off by anyone. i think you will actually like the learning process and they arent bad creatures!!! we all know a little bit about the things we already own (features on our cellphones, features on our tvs, what our bodies can and cannot do, what we can and cannot eat). But good luck with your car!!Do i really have to get a oil change every three months?
You need to find a local mechanic, not a chain store like Jiffy Lube. Find a mechanic and go back to him every single time, for oil changes, repairs, whatever. Make sure he is a good mechanic, try to get recommendations from family or friends, but stick with one mechanic. When you keep going to different stores, they don't know your service history and they may simply recommend services based on your car's mileage. If you establish a relationship with a local mechanic, he will always know your service history, and there is more of a bond of respect and trust there (or should be) when you become a regular customer, so he will be less likely to recommend services just to try to rip you off. This is why I recommend local mechanics, because they want to do a good job so they can continue to compete with the chain stores and continue to stay in business.

But yes, absolutely change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles. You may be able to get away with an extra few hundred miles or a couple of extra weeks, but try to stick to that guideline.

How much does it cost to have a serpentine belt replaced?

i just went in for an oil change and they said i needed a new serpentine belt and another one for my ac. i have a 98 honda accord and just dropped 1300 on a new cadalitic convertor, and i feel like i keep getting ripped off bc i'm a chick. they offered me 120 and i said i would think about it. anyone know if this sounds like a decent price, or could you reccomend an honest mechanic in the san diego area? thanks! How much does it cost to have a serpentine belt replaced?
I'm an old fart, and all my cars are older than 1966, but I stopped to help a guy with a serpentine belt on his Chevy SUV, and I was pleasantly surprised that it's the easiest thing in the world to do!

On his car (the only serpentine belt I've ever installed), there was a tensioner spring that was pulled back using a half-inch drive socket wrench, then you simply lift the belt onto the pully and let go of the wrench. Takes about 2 minutes.

If your mechanic wants $120 to do that job, get another mechanic . . you're getting reamed!

.How much does it cost to have a serpentine belt replaced?
you get rip by those fast lube place. First your car don't have a Serpentine belt. It should have 3 Micro v belts. Each cost from 10 to 18 bucks, and labor to replace all 3 belts is .8 of an hour. But TBH I don't think you need the new belt for your car. Call a repair shop and check the price. How much does it cost to have a serpentine belt replaced?
I work at a GMC dealership and we charge $89.95 to replace most serp. belts. They are not Honda's but $120 seems sort of steep to me.How much does it cost to have a serpentine belt replaced?
you certainly got ripped off on the catalyic converter!, thats crazy!, I would find another shop for sure, a serpentine belt usuually costs about 20 to 30 dollars and takes about five minutes to put on.

I suppose you could but I don't know why you would want too . You don't have to jack the motor up to change the belt. There is a tensioner that losens the belt use that!

HOW TO CHANGE OR REPLACE THE SERPENTINE BELT ON A 1994 CAMARO1994 camaro serpentine belt?
Draw a diagram of the way the belt is on now. Use a 1/2%26quot; or 3/4%26quot; ratchet and a pipe that will fit over the end of the ratchet handle. You will see a square hole to place the drive end of the ratchet into and push or pull to remove and replace the belt. Look for a pulley that has an arm and spring attached to it. That is your tension pulley. On the face you will see the hole. Easy repair once you do it once. No need to pay the $50.00 to $100.00 a shop will demand.1994 camaro serpentine belt?
you need an automobile repair manual for that year and make of car to do this, as it is too hard to explain in here.1994 camaro serpentine belt?
Follow the advice the others have offered here AND!!!! check to see if there is a belt routing diagram on a sticker under the hood somewhere. A real kick in the A$$ when you try to put the belt back on and forget how it was routed.........LOL.

I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?

I just had the serpentine and the alternator drive belts changed, but is there a separate timing belt on my van? If so, how expensive if it to get it changed? I was quoted $450 or so, so they must have to take a lot of the engine apart.I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
Chrysler's service manuals recommend 90,000 miles at the earliest. I would say 75K to 80K is appropriate.

Basically, we have to remove the belts, pulleys, motor mount, lay the PS Pump and AC Compressor aside and remove the bracket and remove the front covers. It is also a good idea to inspect or replace the water pump while in there.

$450 seems to be about average.

I'm assuming you have the 3.0L since you mention timing belt (3.3L and 3.8L have a timing chain, not a belt) and they are prone to oil leaks at the cam seals. It is a good time to do them as well, if they are leaking.I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
Look in your owners manual if you have one.

Mot vehicles recommend to replace it at every 75k to 100k miles, or 10 years, whichever is first. Chrysler manuals usually recommend having it done at 90k miles, with no mention of age. However, I would change it if it gets to 10 years old and has not reached the recommended miles yet just for safety sake.

50,000 miles is too early in most instances to replace the timing belt. At that rate, you'd have replaced it twice in the recommended replacement interval. I replaced mine at 100k miles (and about 6 years old) and it still looked great, which is how you want it, you don't want it all worn out and cracked when it's replaced.

$450 is about right for a timing belt on a voyager, only reason it should go higher is if they find something else needs to be replaced while they're in there. In that case, they should always ask before adding anything to the repair order.I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
should be replaced every 50,000 but most people go to 75;000

450 is about right they have to tear down the front of the engineI have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
About 75,000 miles is good on those engines. However, if your at that mileage, spend a little extra, and replace the water pump, and timing belt tensioner at the same time. The timing belt drives the water pump, and if you've got that sort of mileage on the van, the pump is reaching the end of it's service life. Much better to take care of it, since you'll be right there anyway. It will cost you less in the long run.I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
the timing belt needs to be replaced 75,000.quotes vary from 450.00 to as much 8 or 9.00 make the tech.gauranity price and labor. good luck

How to tighten the fan (serpentine) belt.?

I have a Saturn SL2 and was wondering if anyone can tell me how to tighten the serpentine (fan) belt.

or even how to change/replace one!

any info would be very nice :)How to tighten the fan (serpentine) belt.?
no you not tighten a serpentine belt . it time to buy a new beltHow to tighten the fan (serpentine) belt.?
The Fan on most engines with a Serpentine belt is tightened via a Idler pulley..In other words this pulley has only one job, and that is to tighten the serpentine belt. If you follow your serpentine belt around the various pulleys ( Fan, Alternator, Crankshaft) you will find one pulley which will have a spring tensioner in the back...Sometimes these Idler pulleys will use a common wrench to losten and tighten them..........Its not a Scientific problem to adjust these!!
